Eli Lundy Huggins Civil War letter, 1861, circa 1920.

This collection includes one (1) letter, written to a Confederate lieutenant from his sister during the Civil War; a letter from Eli Lundy Huggins, the Union soldier who found the letter after the Battle of Mill Springs; and transcripts of each. The author and recipient of the Confederate letter are unknown by name except for the author's first name, Martha. Eli Lundy Huggins notes that the letter was written to a Confederate lieutenant, based on the tent in which it was found. The letter was sent from Charleston, Tennessee, and is dated September 8, 1861. Most likely, the lieutenant was a member of the 29th Tennessee Infantry whose members were drawn from Bradley County (Charleston), as well as surrounding counties. The letter mainly dwells on clothing and material that Martha and her mother are sending to her brother, how uniforms may be made from the material, and instructions for sharing some of the clothing with "Columbus," and Pete, an African-American slave who may have been sent to serve the lieutenant during the war. Martha also includes news from home, tells her brother how much he is missed, and refers to food items she is sending. Eli Lundy Huggins' letter explains how he came to possess the letter. He claims to have found it in a lieutenant's tent along with several others, which he eventually discarded. He speculates on Martha's reference to Pete, and the inability of the Confederacy to clothe its army. Huggins' letter is believed to have been written around 1920.
